Mary Evans – Obituary

Mary Evans was born in Wright, Tennessee on July 6, 1921 the daughter of the late William Ernest and Mysia Anna Taylor Erwin.

On December 12, 1945 she was united in marriage to Roy Edward Evans, who preceded his wife in death on May 20, 2001.

Mary was born and raised in the Coffee Landing area of Hardin County, then after marriage moved to River Heights, Tennessee and then completed her life by moving back to the Coffee Landing area. During World War II she was a switchboard phone operator in Memphis, Tennessee. In the 1960’s Mary and her husband were self employed business owners of the Evans’ Grocery Store. She also worked for Brown Shoe Company and was a Substitute Teacher for the Hardin County Board of Education. Mary was a member of Morris Chapel Baptist Church and Crump First Baptist Church. She was President of the Women Mission Union, member of Sunday School Board Brotherhood Commission Women’s Missionary Union of the SBC and was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW #8778. Mary dedicated her time to Vacation Bible School at Morris Chapel Baptist Church and Crump First Baptist Church. Mary received the Christian Training Diploma in July of 1965 of the Sunday School Board of the SBC and the New Church Study Course in 1973. She enjoyed reading her Bible and watching Braves Baseball. Her family love was very important to her.

Mary departed this life on October 10, 2012 in Savannah, Tennessee at the age of 91 years, 3 months and 4 days.

She is survived by one son, Don Evans of Morris Chapel, Tennessee

4 grandchildren, Scott Evans of Vernel, Utah, Josh Evans of Morris Chapel, Tennessee, Heather Brown of Henderson, Tennessee and Holly Bowen of Kingsport, Tennessee

8 great grandchildren, Alayna Lynn Evans, Mari Anne Evans, Colton Gage Brown, Emily Shay Brown, Olivia Paige Brown, Jessie Leath, Christian Radabough and Sean Bowen, Jr.

one sister, Kate Pickens of Crump, Tennessee and two brothers, Ray Othel (Cully) Erwin of Morris Chapel, Tennessee and Fred Erwin of Adamsville, Tennessee

In addition to her parents and her husband, Mary was also preceded in death by one son, Royce Neal Evans, one brother, James Henry Erwin and two sisters, Lavella (Bell) Erwin Reynolds and Dora Dean Erwin Butler.
