Mary Edith Weems Burton, 93, of Brentwood, Tennessee, went home to be with her Lord on Friday, Oct. 2, 2015. Mary was born on Nov. 2, 1921, in Greeneville, Tennessee, to Dr. David Douglas Weems and Macy Fillers Weems. She had lived the past seven years in Brentwood, Tennessee, with her daughter, Sue Burton Powell.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Ambrose Lynn Burton, daughter, Margaret Marie Burton Gallemore, and her parents, along with 14 siblings.
She is survived by daughters, Deborah Burton Seay (Mitchell), of Killen, Alabama, and Sue Burton Powell (Jimmy), of Brentwood, Tennessee; one granddaughter, Jennifer Powell; four grandsons, Daniel Seay (Amy), Andrew Seay (Rachel), J.H. Powell, and David Powell; three great-granddaughters, Caroline Seay, Annalise Seay, and Elizabeth Seay.
Mary graduated from Hiwassee College in 1944 with an associate in arts degree. Upon graduation she went to Washington, D.C., to work in the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Upon the end of World War II, and the return of her college sweetheart from the war, she married her beloved Ambrose Lynn Burton in 1946.
Mary was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Big Stone Gap, Virginia, the Honeycutt Sunday School Class and the United Methodist Women’s Circle. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star #157 and the Wise County Homemaker’s Club. She worked in the Dietary Division of Heritage Hall a number of years.
Mary was a Godly mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her family and friends lovingly called her Granny Burton. She lived an example of the Proverbs 31 woman before her family and leaves behind a rich legacy of faithfulness to God and His Word. She came to know the Lord early in her life and was richly blessed throughout her life because of her personal relationship to Christ. Therefore, her children rise up and call her blessed.
Special thanks to the staff at The Blakeford for their attentive care for Mary.
