Lutie Williams Houston Brown was born Feb. 28, 1940, died Monday April 23, 2018. She was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church of Decaturville, TN, the author of the book Pioneer Preacher, a Past State President of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, and Past President of the Middleburg Ruritan Club, and National Director of the Ruritan Club. She was proud to be one of first female County Commissioners for Henderson County and served for from 1998-2006. After forty two years in education she enjoyed spending time with family, traveling, fishing, hunting, riding 4 wheelers, golfing and quilting in her retirement years. She was known as Mrs. Houston to many students that she loved dearly. Every young person she met, she would ask “Did I have you in class?” After the passing of her first husband, Dr. Kenneth Ray Houston, God blessed her with Bobby Joe Brown and an even larger family to enjoy. Lutie always talked to everyone wherever she was and made sure there were always pictures taken.
Lutie was the baby, the seventh child of the Andrew Leroy Williams family of Boone Lane in Jackson, TN. It was no secret she was cherished by her father. When it came time for her to go to college he sold a cow to pay her way. While at college working at the Tea Room the story is told many men tried to get her attention then one young man asked “what can I do to impress you?” Her answer was “You already have!“ Ken Houston then promised Lutie’s Dad she would finish her education. She ended up with her Masters plus 45 and had 5 daughters all with college degrees.
She is survived by her husband, Bobby Joe Brown, her children: Linda (Phil) Steiger, Kim (David) Dowdy and Cynthia (David) Head; step-children Barb Nau, Mary (Mark) Ewert, and Jerry (Erin) Brown and 18 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren, brother Kenneth Williams, sister Clara Lynn Williams and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death, by her parents, Leroy and Claribel Robinson Williams, husband Dr. Kenneth Ray Houston, her daughters, Angela Houston Davis and Denise Houston Joyner, grandson, Matthew Edgin, sister, Nancy Turner and brothers, David, Andrew Leroy and Hubert Williams. She was loved dearly and never met a stranger.
In lieu of flowers, the Brown family request donations be made to the Oak Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund in care of “Glenda Reeves 300 Gibson Drive, Darden, TN 38328.”
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April, 25, 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM and Thursday, April 26 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Funeral services will be at Pafford Funeral Home in Lexington at 3:00 PM, Thursday, April 26, 2018. Interment will follow in Oak Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery, Middleburg, TN.
