Lucy Gilbert Ingram Ware, beloved wife of Joseph M. Ware, died Sunday morning, May 25, 2014, surrounded by her family. She was the mother of Sarah Lee Ware, Susan Ware Henderson, Virginia Ware Gilluly, and Joseph Murray Ware Jr.
Born in Florence on Aug. 11, 1929, Lucy was raised and schooled in Florence and graduated from the University of Alabama. She was always active in civic affairs including the Muscle Shoals District Service League, Helen Keller Public Library, Northwest Alabama Rehabilitation Center, and the Tennessee Valley Art Association. She was voted Colbert Business Professional Woman of the Year. She held several positions in the Girl Scouts, including Council Board Member, neighborhood chair, delegate to National Council Meeting, and a leader of Troop 179. She was also very active in ministries of the Episcopal church, including the Diocesan Board, past chair of the Episcopal Church Women of Alabama, and as past president of the ECW of Trinity Church. Lucy was an avid volunteer as a Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School helper, Altar Guild member, Lay Reader, and was the first woman to serve on the Vestry.
Other activities included PTA, Deshler Band Boosters, Board of Directors YMCA, Mental Health Association, and the Muscle Shoals Concert Association. Lucy was a member of the Maud Lindsay Study Club, Florence Study Club, Colonial Dames, Les Bon Vivantes Gourmet Club, and the Bridge Club.
Although busy with many civic and church interests, Lucy enjoyed flower gardening, tennis, cooking, and taking care of her family.
She is survived by her husband of almost 60 years, Joseph M. Ware; daughters, Sarah Lee Ware and Susan Ware Henderson and her husband, Lee; grandchildren, Kathleen Henderson Vinson (Adam), Andrea Gilbert Henderson, David Murray Gilluly, Sean Michael Gilluly; and a host of family and friends.
The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. today at Trinity Episcopal Church
followed by burial at Oakwood Cemetery. There is no scheduled visitation. The family requests no flowers.
