LEIGHTON-The Northwest Alabama Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) Council gave $11,942.50 to Leighton Elementary School in Colbert County, Alabama, for the purchase of 59 ASUS chromeboxes, which are new, compact computers that can connect to multiple displays at once, according to ASUS’s website. Every teacher received at least two of the devices in their classroom for student use.
Leighton Elementary School Librarian Mary Underwood said that the chromeboxes were installed November 17 and 18 by Louis Delbert, Mike Ricketts, and Nick Pearson, who are the technicians for Colbert County. Underwood said, “Thank you so much for allowing Leighton students to access a broader world of learning. RC&D has given our students the opportunity to bridge the digital gap.” The students are using the computers in their classrooms for interactive games and activities to promote learning such as Study Island, Renaissance Place, Pearson Success, math games, and research.
Roger Hayes, Chairman of the Northwest Alabama RC&D Council, said the Council is very supportive of schools in the community accessing better technology. “The Council will continue to support projects that are helping our students learn and gain new opportunities,” Hayes said. He also expressed his appreciation to Senator Larry Stutts as well as Representatives Marcel Black and Johnny Mack Morrow who represent Colbert County well and provide support for the RC&D in the state legislature.
