Jon Joseph Spano passed away on November 5th surrounded by his loving family.

 

A native of Columbus, Georgia, born August 22, 1936, he graduated from Auburn University in 1959 with a degree in Civil Engineering. After enlisting, he would earn further certifications from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, the Command and General Staff College, and the Harvard John F. Kennedy School of Government before retiring from the US Army as a Lieutenant Colonel, Combat Engineering. His profession included various project engineering and project management roles with Brown Engineering Company, NASA, US Army Missile Command, Patriot Project Office, and the Corps of Engineers, plus consulting in public works engineering.

 

Jon was an avid golfer and an original member of Valley Hill Country Club as well as a member of The Ledges. He was a fan of Auburn football and loved to travel with friends and family, especially to Laguna Beach. He was a proud member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. Jon was a patriot with a deep appreciation of the United States of America, and, most importantly, loved his family more than anything. He always stated his case, of which he was certain, and lived a life that was full, traveling each and every highway, doing it his way.

 

He is survived by his children, Judson Huey Spano (Leigh) and Julie Spano McAlister (Ernie); grandchildren, Taylor Spano (Tyler), Rebecca McConnell (Harrison) and Justin McAlister (Sarah); great-grandson, Oliver; and sister, Emily Spano.

 

Jon was preceded in death by his wife, Jule Spano, father, Salvadore Spano, mother, Rose Spano, and brother, Bernard Spano.

 

Visitation will be at 1:30 on Tuesday, November 8th at Good Shepherd Catholic Church immediately followed by 2:00 service. He will be laid to rest Wednesday, November 9th in Ramer, Alabama beside his wife, Jule.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Good Shepherd Catholic Church; Huntsville Hospital Hospice Family Care; or Wounded Warrior Project
