JohnJohn D. Sherrill, 91, of Decatur passed away peacefully Tuesday, October 27, 2015 at Decatur Morgan Hospital surrounded by his five children. Mr. Sherrill was born September 24, 1924 in Decatur to John Russell Sherrill and Annie Missouri Cagle. He was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church since 1936 and in his later years attended Central United Methodist Church Sunday School Class. He was a graduate of Riverside High School where he was one of “Shorties Boys”, under Shorty Ogle. He was a 1950 graduate of the University of Alabama where he played football from 1947 until 1949. He received his BS in Commerce and Business Administration from the University and was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. He was elected “King Bee III” in 1948. Mr. Sherrill was an Army Air Force Veteran serving in WWII. Mr. Sherrill spent his working career in sales and public relations. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Peggy Fox Sherrill and siblings Louise Hunter and Lucille Johnston. He is survived by his children, Patty Hall (O.Z. Jr.); Kathy Evans (Stan A.), Paige Colantonio (Donald F.), John D. Sherrill, Jr. and Hunter Sherrill (Kimberly), also nine grandchildren, O. Z. Hall III (Grace), Bagby Hall (LeighAnna), Sara-Margaret Hall, Sae Evans (Leslie), Katie Caldwell (Josh), Trey Colantonio (Courtland), John Arthur Colantonio, Christian Colantonio and Christie Nichols, and eight great grandchildren. Visitation will be Friday, October 30, 2015 from 10:00am until 11:00am at Central United Methodist Church. Funeral services will follow at 11:00am at the Church with Reverend Gary Formby officiating. A private family graveside will follow. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to Hospice of the Valley, P.O. Box 2745 Decatur, Alabama 35602 or The Harold Coomer Evangelistic Association,1102 4th Avenue S. Decatur, Alabama 35601. Hartselle Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family.
