Mr. Corum, who died on Sunday, October 25, 2015 at Crestwood Medical Center in Huntsville, was born November 22, 1937 in Anderson, Alabama to Louis Collins Corum and Carrie Morgan Corum. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters; Forthie Alexander, Velerie Farmer, Othell Hammond and Clela Mae Higgingbotham
Jim Corum was a much-loved and well- respected citizen of Hartselle and Morgan County. He was never afraid to voice his opinions or beliefs and people quickly learned they could trust him for advice or guidance. He was always willing to serve his Community and to lead others. Through the years, Jim received many awards and kind recognitions, such as Honorary Alabama Colonel and State Trooper, the E.R. Roberts Business and Civic Award and the Tommy Ed Roberts Civic Award. He loved the Morgan County Cattlemen’s Association, serving as both President and Director and was awarded the Morgan County Cattlewomen’s “Father of the Year” Award. He was a member of the Hartselle Rotary Club for over 35 years and was a Paul Harris Fellow recipient.
Jim loved sports and was an avid Hartselle supporter for every variety of sport and was a longtime member of the Hartselle Athletic Booster Club. As a younger man, he coached his children in Youth Football, Softball and Baseball. As he grew older, he became a regular attendee at each Hartselle High School Football game and was honored by The Decatur Daily with a news article calling him “Hartselle’s # 1 Football Fan”. He certainly was; you’d only need one hand to count the number of games he missed in the last 49 years! The tradition continued with his grandchildren, and if it was at all possible, you’d find him at their games, usually sitting close enough to call advice to all of the players – and the coaches.
He was an integral part of the Hartselle Business Community as one of the founding partners of Carroll and Corum Building Supply (now known as Corum’s Building and Farm Center,) a thriving home construction and farm supply store that has served the area for more than 43 years.
Jim also loved the Lord! He and Jan joined Westview Church of Christ not long after its inception and have been faithful members ever since. He has served as an elder there for the last several years.
