CHECK HERE FOR ROAD CLOSURES IN THE AREA

THE SHOALS – The Tennessee Valley Authority is preparing the communities which lie along the Tennessee River’s banks for some severe flooding. Predictions call for the river to rise beyond its banks, rivaling the record flood of 2003. Rainfall totals over the past 3 days have broken records throughout the area. Governor Robert Bentley has declared the area a disaster zone. The Governor’s Office reports that 190 roads are closed in various counties statewide.

The Quad-Cities Daily travelled out to areas affected by Lake Pickwick’s rising floodwaters to record this morning’s levels. We traveled to Sheffield’s Cliff Haven, Florence’s McFarland Park and Marina, Spring Creek, and Cypress Creek, as well as the area surrounding Wilson Dam. There, the spillways were flowing at their maximum in an effort to move the torrent downstream. The only bright note was the excellent fishing by the waterfowl that feasted on fish swept to the surface by the currents.
