Francis “Mac” McBride, a devoted father, grandfather, brother, and cherished community figure, passed away peacefully in Alabama on August 29, 2025, at the age of 81. No services are scheduled at this time.
Born in Rockledge, Florida, Mac was destined for a life of service. With deep family roots in law enforcement and military policing, he began his career at Sherwood Medical Industries before joining the DeLand Police Department in 1975. Over the next 45 years, Mac became a beloved fixture in Downtown DeLand, known for his daily patrols, warm greetings, and unwavering dedication to the safety and well-being of local residents and merchants.
Mac pioneered community policing through his “Night Eyes” program, personally checking storefronts and leaving notes to assure business owners their properties were secure. His presence brought comfort and connection, earning him the admiration of generations of officers and the gratitude of the community he served.
He is survived by his children, Troy, Tanya, Todd, and Travis; his four grandchildren; and his brother, Stuart McBride. His family was his greatest joy, and his legacy of kindness and service will live on in their hearts and in the city he helped shape.
Commander Francis “Mac” McBride will be deeply missed, but his spirit endures in every corner of Downtown Deland, where his care and compassion left a lasting mark.
