Funeral service for Mr. Edmond Wyche, Jr. (former Coach at AAMU) was Friday, February 26, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Bennie Smith Funeral Home (717 West Division Street – Dover, DE. Interment was in Sharon Hills Odd Fellows Cemetery – Camden.
Edmond Wyche, Jr. (“Ed”) was born on June 15, 1933 to the late Edmond and Jennie Wyche. He was saved after having accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his Savior before departing this life. Ed was surrounded by his loved ones when the Lord called him home on Tuesday, February 16, 2016.
Ed graduated from Union Academy High School in Bartow, FL where he was an outstanding football player. He also played football at Florida A&M University where he received his bachelor’s degree in physical education. He later obtained his master’s degree in supervision and administration from Howard University.
Ed began his football coaching career at Attucks High School, Decatur High School and McKinley Tech High School. His collegiate career began as a coach in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. He continued his collegiate career at the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association and the Southwestern Athletic Conference. He served as either a football coach or athletic director at Howard University, Delaware State University, Morgan State University, Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, Norfolk State University, Hampton University, North Carolina A&T, Alabama A&M University, and Fort Valley State where he retired. Among his many accomplishments, Ed was named MEAC coach of the year while at Delaware State, NAIA District 19 coach of the year while at Hampton, and Birmingham Forecasters coach of the year while at Alabama A&M. In addition to his career as a football coach and athletic director, Ed served as a scout for the Seattle Seahawks for a short period of time.
Ed was an avid sports person who loved all types of sports, but his first love was football. After he retired, he found a second love, the game of golf. He would play in tournaments, with friends, and even by himself every week (weather permitting) until he became ill, but nonetheless would watch it on television. Ed was a member of the Jonathan’s Landing Golf Course in Magnolia, DE.
Ed was a good-natured man who touched the lives of so many. He was known as the coach who would help anyone who wanted to pursue a football career as well as a college education. He had a heart of gold to mentor and nurture others as he was given that same opportunity. He never forgot his beginning. Several of the football players he coached went on to become pro NFL football players. Ed would always say, “I had a good life.”
Ed leaves to cherish his memories four daughters, Cheryl Williams (Mickey), Port St. Lucie, FL, Sherry Parrish (Michael, deceased), Hyattsville, MD, Tosca Williams, Ft. Lauderdale, FL and Tammie Edwards, Bowie, MD; two sons, Barry Wyche (Bridget), Tampa, FL and Huey Wyche (Celeste) Accokeek, MD; 22 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Elizabeth Moreland Melbourne, FL); three sisters-in-law, Eleanor Dawley Jones, Virginia Beach, VA, Barbara Bess (George), Baltimore, MD, and Lillian Childers, Washington, DC; a devoted friend, Saxton Graham, and a host of relatives and friends. As a friend and parent, I am grateful for the opportunity Coach Wyche afforded my two sons while football players at Hampton University, one son as quarterback and the other a punter. We
shall always remember how he protected his players and encouraged them to put their education first.
