Dorothy “Dot” Virginia Tibbs Martin Kotal, 100, of Fort Payne, formerly of Atlanta, passed away Monday, June 30, 2025 at her home. She was born June 27, 1925, in Atlanta, Georgia, to the late Clarence Jones Tibbs and Carrie Jane Patton Tibbs. After marrying Capt. James Carlton “Pete” Martin, the two of them, and later their daughter Brenda, lived all over the United States and Europe while he served in the Army Air Corp. and the United States Air Force during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He passed in 1952 and she and Brenda returned to Atlanta. She owned and operated the Peachtree Road Beauty Salon and Spa for many years. In 1954, she met and married Charles William “Sam” Kotal, a Sergeant in the United States Army, who served in the Korean Conflict. Dot was a member of Mt. Zion Methodist Church in Atlanta and loved the sights and sounds of the beach. She carried a bottle of Tabasco sauce with her all times! She was a beloved Mother and MeMe.

A Celebration Reception is planned at her home for Wednesday evening from 4 until 6 p.m. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Eastern on Thursday, July 3rd at Westview Cemetery in Atlanta. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to St. Jude’s.
She is survived by her daughter Brenda Martin Bryant; granddaughter Johnna Harris and husband, Tim; and grandchildren Emilee Harris and Braxton Harris.
She was preceded in death by husband Pete Martin and husband Sam Kotal and her parents.
