Mr. David James Crowell, of Florence, passed away Sunday, January 1, 2017, just ten days shy of celebrating his 87th birthday. Mr. Crowell was a member of the United States Air Force and served his country in the Korean War. After an honorable discharge, Mr. Crowell continued as a civil servant by working at Red Stone Arsenal. During his time there he had the privilege of helping complete the Saturn V rocket, which was used to launch the first American Space Station. He later transferred to the Northwest Regional Airport and worked there until he retired with the Federal Aviation Administration. Mr. Crowell was also a long-time member of the Church of Christ. Of all of his great achievements, he was most proud of his family.
Visitation will be held Saturday, January 7, from 12:00-1:30 p.m. at Greenview Funeral Home. A memorial service with Brother Jeff Abrams officiating will begin at 1:30 p.m. in Greenview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in Greenview Memorial Park.
Mr. Crowell was preceded in death by his parents, James and Catherine Crowell; son, James Vernon Crowell; and beloved wife, Olene Castleberry Crowell.
He is survived by his loving daughter and caregiver, Cathie Crowell Gregory; grandchildren, Michael Crowell (Natonya), Julita Nix (Lee), Catherine Crowell-Agnew (Freeman); great-grandchildren, Kenlee Nix, Cotton Crowell, Alexander Cole Barnes, Hannah Barnes; friend, Robert Zills; nieces and nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
Active pallbearers will be Michael Crowell, Cotton Crowell, Lee Nix, Kenlee Nix,
Robert Zills and Freeman Agnew.
Grandson, SN (SW) Alexander Cole Barnes E-3, who is currently serving in the United States Navy will serve as an honorary pallbearer.
The family would like extend special thanks to Eldercare, Gentiva Hospice and Veterans Administration Hospice.
