TUSCUMBIA, Ala. -The Tennessee Valley Art Association celebrates the holidays this year with its annual “Trees of Christmas” exhibit, a show and sale of holiday work by TVAA artist-members, a performance of the classic play “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” and – new this year – a tree-ornament workshop for children.

An always-popular tradition, the Trees of Christmas exhibit is at the Tennessee Valley Museum of Art, 511 N. Water St., Tuscumbia, from 9 a.m. through 5 p.m. weekdays and 1-3 p.m. Sundays, from Friday, Nov. 30, through Monday, Dec. 24.

Nov. 30 through Dec. 24. The exhibit also will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8, as part of the downtown Tuscumbia “Dickens of a Christmas.”

“This is the area’s premier Christmas tree display – the only one with trees decorated by community people who want to share their stories and interests with others,” said Mary Settle Cooney, TVAA executive director. “This year’s trees will be spectacular, with new decorators as well as long-time favorites. As you wander through the forest of nine 12-feet tall fir trees, you will learn about your friends and neighbors in the Shoals, who they are and what they value. The volunteer decorators use imagination, creativity and whimsy to create both traditional and out-of-the-ordinary trees you won’t see anywhere else.”

Decorators are Jim Allen, Florence, “Stars Fell on Alabama;” the Roy Herston family, Rogersville, “Snowmen Melt Your Heart;” 4-H members from Colbert and Franklin counties, A Winter Wonderland;” Loxx Hair Studio, Muscle Shoals, “Tangled;” Girl Scouts of North-Central Alabama, “Celebrating 100 Years of Girl Scouting;” Nickie Campbell, Muscle Shoals, and granddaughter Morgan Presley, “Christmas at the Beach;” David Christopher’s Artistic Design Gifts & More, “Christmas Memories;” Tuscumbia Retail Development, “It’s a Dickens Christmas, Y’all;” and Railway Employees Credit Union and Norfolk Southern Railroad, “Trains, Trains & More Trains.”

Also during the trees exhibit, holiday artwork from TVAA member-artists will be in the museum’s Education Gallery.

“This has become a favorite with museum visitors,” Cooney said. “The art adds to the festive atmosphere — and the purchase of art is the perfect way to check names off of your gift list.”

Each year I think that next year won’t be able to top this year. I was proven wrong this year.
