Celebration and Preservation/Rise of the Southern Craft Movement all at Tennessee Valley Art Association

TUSCUMBIA-Pen and ink artist Melissa Tubbs will be exhibiting a collection of her drawings called Celebration & Preservation: Drawing Alabama’s Architectural History June 2 – July 5 at the Tennessee Valley Museum of Art.
The exhibition is a touring Alabama Bicentennial project featuring 25 drawings of landmarks from across the state. Accompanying the exhibit will be a book by the same name featuring prints of the drawings along with information about the history of each building.
An opening reception will be held June 2 from 1 to 3 p.m., at the museum where Tubbs will give a gallery talk.

The Tennessee Valley Museum of Art’s exhibition The Rise of the Southern Craft Movement will feature a selection of fine art and craft from its permanent collection and will be on display fromJune 2 to July 5.
The Rise of the Southern Craft Movement features a series of purchase awards made by the Tennessee Valley Art Association during their time organizing the Helen Keller Art and Craft Show at the Helen Keller Festival from 1983 through 2011.
The exhibition The Rise of the Southern Craft Movement is an endorsed Alabama Bicentennial event.

Summer Studio

The Tennessee Valley Museum of Art is accepting applications for the Summer Studio, an art camp for young people interested in small-group art instruction that will improve skills and cultivate creativity. Sessions will be held at the art museum, 511 N. Water St., Tuscumbia.

Classes include:
The Young Artist Series for rising 3rd – 5th graders
July 9 – 12, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Young Artist Series will feature the classes: Printmaker’s Place with Barb Hendricks, Art Around the World with Pam Wright, Funky Folk Art with Provie Musso and Express and Impress with Wesley Hooper.

The Portrait Study, a three-day class for students entering grades 8 – 12
July 9 – 11 from 10 a.m. to noon
Portrait Study students will work with professional portrait artist Martha Carpenter. This course is a review of basic academic drawing and includes the study of value, composition and hand-eye coordination. Participants will explore texture, tone and the elements of portraiture. Participants will recreate works of masters and explore facial structures.
