Carla Miller King, proponent of the arts, teacher, community leader, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother peacefully passed away on May 2, 2016. Born Carla Gay Miller in Orlando, Florida on February 21, 1946, she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts and English from Queens College in Charlotte, North Carolina; matriculated at the Institute of European Studies in Vienna, Austria; and in 1968 received a Teaching Certificate from the University of Alabama in Birmingham.

She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Benjamin Rogers King, M.D.; son, Rogers King (Erika); daughter, Bradley Fogelman (Robert); grandchildren, Ben King, Miller King of Atlanta, GA; Foster Fogelman, Eliza Fogelman of Memphis, TN. Carla was predeceased by her parents, Mary Jane Hutchins and Carl Henry Miller of Orlando, FL.

Early on, Carla’s passion for, and her keen understanding of the need for awareness, of the Arts led her to advocate through teaching. Before moving to Huntsville, in 1978, Carla taught Art and English at Gardendale High School and gave private art lessons at the Littlehouse on Linden in Birmingham, AL. Carla was a tireless giver of her time to family, friends, and community. She served on the Board of directors for the Huntsville Museum Foundation; The Arts Council; Community Ballet; Huntsville Amateur Hockey; and Randolph School. Through her participation on the Aesthetic Education Committee of the Junior League, which researched the needs of our communities art groups, Panoply of the Arts evolved of which she Co-Chaired the first festival in 1982. A Virginia Hammil Simms nominee, Carla continuously worked for the betterment of her community serving as Ball Chairman on behalf of the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra Guild; Co-Chairman of the Huntsville Museum of Art Gala; and President Madison County Medical Alliance. Carla, a lifelong Episcopalian, was a dedicated member of The Church of the Nativity. She loved her family, her friends, and her community, and they will all miss her dearly.

The family wishes to specifically thank her care givers, Delores Burns, Susan Janus, Elaine Calhoun, Susi Stroud, Kaylie Hill, and Stephanie Atchley, who have been nothing short of angels. They provided such amazing care to Carla during her battle with ALS, we will be forever grateful.

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Wednesday at The Church of the Nativity. A memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at The Church of the Nativity.
