Betty Puckett, 94, of Athens Alabama passed away on Friday, September 26, 2025 surrounded by family.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Sidney Puckett; her son, Lee Puckett; her grandson, Laith Puckett; her parents, Sadie and Howard Phillips; her brother and sister-in-law, William and Villette Phillips; brother, Richard Phillips and her sister, Helen Hunt.
Betty (Grandma) is survived by daughter, Kay Howe (Joe); son, David Puckett (Angie); daughter-in-law Diane Puckett; grandchildren Justin, Tyler and Ryan Puckett, Tessa Gavagan; and great-grandchildren, Asher, Vivian Rose, Liberty and Brantley, and several nieces and nephews.
Betty was born in Birmingham and graduated from Ensley High School. She spent most of her adult life in North Alabama and called Athens home for over 55 years. She was a housewife and loving mother. Betty was a devoted member of First Baptist Church in Athens and she shared her Christian spirit with everyone she came in contact with.
Betty loved reading and you could almost always catch her sitting on a porch somewhere with a book in one hand and a glass of sweet tea in the other. She enjoyed shopping trips and eating out. And flowers…… boy did she love flowers! Betty created a warm country home with farm, cow, chicken and rooster items everywhere.
Family was so important to her. Grandma made sure that every holiday or family celebration was special, filled with traditions, and the table was full of homecooked food. Just a few favorites at the Puckett table included cornbread, sweet corn, fried okra and at Thanksgiving, the best dressing you will ever eat. She almost always had a homemade cake or pie to satisfy your sweet tooth. And of course, her famous homemade sweet tea. Times spent around the family table or on the back screened in porch produced some of the best family memories.
Betty will be remembered for her spirit to live each day, her beautiful smile, laugher in her eyes, warm hugs, storytelling and the love that she showed to so many people. She will be greatly missed.
Local care facilities ultimately became home for her. Limestone Manor was the first to welcome her with open arms. There, she met new friends and was well taken care of. The family would like to thank the staff at Limestone Manor, Limestone Nursing & Rehabilitation Center and Valley View Health & Rehabilitation. Each facility was such a blessing and provided wonderful care, service and comfort for the past few years of her life.
Visitation for family and friends will be held on Sunday, October 5th from noon-2:00 p.m. at Spry Funeral Home in Athens, followed by a graveside service at Roselawn Cemetery with Brother Joe Teal officiating.
