Mrs. Betty LeFurgey Culver slipped peacefully into the arms of our Lord on Friday, January 10.
The funeral service will be held at Laughlin Service Funeral Home on Friday, January 17, 2025, at 12 noon with Pastor Russ Gipson of Grace Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will follow at Valhalla Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on January 17, 2025, at 11:15 a.m.
She was born on February 14, 1934, in Birmingham, Alabama to William James and Viola Hulgan LeFurgey. Betty was the youngest of five children. She attended the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa where she was a member of Alpha Phi Sorority.
Betty lived in Birmingham until 1965 when she made her home in Huntsville with her husband and three children. She had a diverse career with stints as a church secretary, owner/operator/partner of a successful air conditioning company, ran an antiques store affectionately named “Miz Mousey’s” and worked in the warrant office of the Madison County Sheriff’s department.
Mom supported the endeavors of her children, serving as a Girl Scout Troop leader, member of the PTA at West Mastin Lake Elementary, concession stand volunteer for Little Leage at Stoner Field and parent supporter of equestrian efforts through the Huntsville Pony Club. She drove field trips, typed term papers and always encouraged us to live up to our best potential.
Betty always had a yen for travel, often turning an afternoon ride into an adventure ending up miles from home. We often found ourselves in the Smoky Mountains or at the beach which she loved. Her travels took her to Paris, Hungary, and Mexico to name a few. In later years, she travelled the country by motor home with her husband, Howard. Many trips were to the west including parts of Texas, Wyoming and Montana. On one extended trip, they were supposedly started home but called a week later to say they were in Seattle.
Betty is survived by her children, Deborah Satterfield, Rebecca Free (Ron), and Alan McKelvy (Sandi); six grandchildren, David Satterfield (Melissa), Sandi Gibbs (Carey), Travis Satterfield (Jenny), Kimberly Daugherty (Chris), Erin Parker (Brad), and Emily Jackson (David). “Momo” especially loved to be surrounded by her 14 great-grands, Chloe, Layla and Amilia Satterfield; Izzy, Anna, Ben and Oliver Daugherty; Ivy, Scarlett and Tessa Gibbs; Zethan McKelvy and Skye, Lexie and Lily Jackson; and bonus great-grandson, Jimmy Petroshock. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by husbands, Harold Darden, Harold McKelvy, and Howard “Fuzzy” Culver; her parents and siblings; and her son-in-law, Gene Satterfield.
The family wishes to express our heartfelt gratitude Hospice of North Alabama and the staff of Whitesburg Gardens/Rocket City Rehabilitation Center for the care given to Mom in her final days.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Hospice of North Alabama, the American Heart Association, or the American Diabetes Association.
