Mrs. Andrée Callis passed away peacefully on February 21 at 100 years of age. She was born Andrée Adele Mougin on February 8, 1920 in Cornimont, France. She was preceded in death by her father, Louis Arsène; mother, Eugènie Charlotte Clémence Zwillig; sister, Solange Gehin; and husband, Gene Callis.
Her work with the French Resistance during World War II earned her a Certificate of Recognition from General Charles de Gaulle. During her career, she held the position of manager at medical clinics in Bar-le-Duc and Angers, France.
She married Joseph Eugene Callis, an officer in the United States Army, in Paris, France in 1956. In the mid 1960s, they made Huntsville, Alabama their home. In 1982 Mrs. Callis proudly became a citizen of the United States of America.
She is survived by her brother, Pierre Mougin; one niece, two nephews, and many grand-nieces and grand-nephews; as well as extended family and friends across the world, including those she lovingly referred to as her American family.
Mrs. Callis added an extraordinary dimension to the lives of those who knew her. Through her intelligence, humor, and vast knowledge of humanity and history she helped her friends gain a great appreciation for French culture. She will be dearly missed.
Visitation will be Sunday, March 1 at Laughlin Service Funeral Home from 2-4pm. She will be interned at Arlington National Cemetery alongside her beloved husband, Gene.
