MONTGOMERY-In January, Alabama launched a new program that is designed to invest in both workers and industry, helping to support the recruitment of new jobs and capital investment into the state.  Apprenticeship Alabama offers tax credits to companies that hire qualified apprentices who receive on-the-job and classroom training.  The program focuses on the following five industry sectors:

  • Healthcare
  • Construction/carpentry
  • Information technology (IT)
  • Distribution/transportation/logistics
  • Advanced manufacturing/industrial maintenance

Under the plan approved by the Alabama Legislature last year, qualified companies can receive a $1,000 income tax credit for each apprentice, up to five apprentices per year.  The program will follow the U.S. Department of Labor guidelines for apprenticeships and will be managed by the Alabama Department of Commerce.  Apprenticeship Alabama allows an opportunity for the state’s workforce to continue working on the job while receiving additional training and credentials, helping workers increase their earning potential and creating a more highly skilled workforce for the state.
