John Wesley Thomas, a devoted family man, accomplished engineer and leader in the aerospace industry, passed away on March 14, 2025, at the age of 87. Born in Limestone County, Alabama, he built a legacy of excellence, service, and innovation that spanned more than six decades.

John graduated from Butler High School in Huntsville, AL, before earning a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Auburn University. His distinguished career began in 1960 and was marked by significant contributions to space exploration. He served as chief engineer, deputy program manager, and program manager for major manned spacecraft projects, including Skylab and Spacelab. He led major investigation teams for Shuttle Orbiter TPS damage and the Challenger Accident Analysis Panel. He subsequently led the NASA redesign of the Challenger Shuttle Solid Rocket Motor. He was also instrumental in the Columbia Accident Investigation.

Later in his career, John served as Vice President and General Manager, as well as Site Director for Lockheed Martin at Kennedy Space Center, leading an industry team in preparation, launch and recovery of the Space Shuttle. His leadership extended to diverse technical and test services at Stennis Space Center. He remained deeply involved in NASA’s programs, serving on the NASA Standing Review Board for the Constellation and International Space Station programs and consulting for NASA on the Space Launch Systems Program until his passing.

Throughout his career, John received numerous accolades, including the NASA Exceptional Service Medal, NASA Distinguished Service Medal, and the Presidential Meritorious Executive Award. He was honored as an Outstanding Alumni and Distinguished Engineer by Auburn University and was inducted into the State of Alabama Engineering Hall of Fame.

John was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sara Ashby Thomas, and his parents, Wesley and Edith Thomas. He is survived by his children, Lee Anna Wright (Paul) and David Thomas (Andrea); his grandchildren, Lindsey Kelly, Brian Wright, Lee Thomas, and Andrew Thomas; and four great-grandchildren, all of whom he cherished deeply.

Visitation will be from 2 to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, at Maple Hill Cemetery, with the graveside service following at 3.

A man of faith and integrity, John was a dedicated member of First United Methodist Church in Huntsville, AL. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the church’s Building Fund in his memory.

John’s legacy of leadership, innovation, and devotion to family will be remembered and honored by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
