Eva Mae Lewis was born October 11, 1936, in Jackson County, Alabama to Thomas Clifford Rounsavall and Mary J. Anderson Rounsavall. She graduated from Scottsboro High School and has remained closely connected with her classmates. She married Howard R. Lewis in 1969, and he preceded her in death in 1989. He is remembered by many for having served as deputy sheriff, policeman and detective in Scottsboro for more than 20 years. Mrs. Lewis is well known to area residents for having clerked at Hammer’s Department Store for nearly 40 years. She considered her fellow employees at Hammers’s to be like family. She loved sewing and crafting and made beautiful items which she gave away to family and friends. She was a member of Center Point Baptist Church.
She is survived by her sister, Rose Helen Berry and husband, Emmett Berry, of Scottsboro; her sister-in-law, Wilma Rounsavall of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; stepson, Ken Lewis, and wife, Shelia, of Frisco, Texas; grand-daughters, Katie Lewis Taylor of Fayetteville, Arkansas, Christina Lewis of Needham, Massachusetts, and Hayley Lewis of Fort Worth, Texas. Her grandchildren are Lucie, Brady and Remy Taylor, and Reece and Simone Lewis. Her nephews included Brooks, Charles, David and Wayne Berry of Scottsboro, and Thomas C. Rounsavall of Washington, D.C. Her niece is Christine Locke of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and the late, Ann Berry, of Scottsboro. She has numerous great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, James Rounsavall of Morristown, Tennessee.
Serving as pallbearers are Wayne, David, Charles, Jon and Cliff Berry, and Matt Davis. Honorary pallbearers are Emmett Berry and Brooks Berry.
The family wishes to thank her nephew, Brooks Berry and his wife, Mary, as well as grand-niece Courtney Johnson for their tender and loving care of Mrs. Lewis in the past months of her illness. Also, special thanks to Brittney Crook and the team at Affinity Hospice for their care and kindness.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 5, 2023, at Scottsboro Funeral Home with Rev. Mike Maynor officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday, August 4, 2023 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Scottsboro Funeral Home. The burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
