Bettye was a native of Etowah County and a member of Bellevue Baptist Church where, among other capacities, she served as a Sunday school teacher to so many. She graduated from Etowah High School and the Holy Name of Jesus Nursing School. She was a lifelong nurse, serving at area hospitals. She also worked as an OR Supervisor / Administrator at the Gadsden Surgery Center from its opening until her retirement.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Jerry Ralph Malone; parents, Dewey H. Whisenant and Velma Naylor Whisenant; siblings, Arnold Whisenant, Vera Stephens, W.C. Whisenant, Thomas Whisenant, and Wanda Dean Whisenant.
She is survived by her sons, Tom (Mayra) Malone, Steven Naylor (Lee) Malone; daughter, LeAnne (Steve) McDaniel; grandchildren, Leslie (Rory) Carter, Lindsey (Paul) Budd, Mary-Margaret (Corey) Howell, Thomas Malone, and Lindsey Naylor Malone; great-grandchildren, Levi, Liam, Rory, Lily, and Chloe Carter, Bennett Budd, and Caroline Howell.
She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews that she adored and held a special place in her heart.
Bettye and Jerry were so proud of the family they built together. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were her biggest accomplishment. She was known for her “green thumb” and her selfless service to many needing medical advice, a kind word, a hospital visit or stay, or just a simple conversation. She loved to cook and enjoyed get-togethers with her friends and family. She loved children, especially all of her grandchildren, spoiling them with ice cream, their favorite food, gifts, and most of all with her time and unwavering love.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Penny Pondick, R.N., and her staff at Royal Haven at Regency Pointe for their exceptional care, love, and support for Bettye.
Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to Kyuka Missionary Baptist Church.
Visitation will be from 12:00 noon to 1 PM at Kyuka Missionary Baptist Church before the service.
