Helen Grace Mathison Hooker – Obituary

Helen Grace Mathison Hooker, 94, of Huntsville, AL, passed away Sunday. Mrs. Hooker was born in Dale County, Alabama. With her father being a school principal and her mother a teacher her family relocated to several school systems throughout the state of Alabama where she received her education. She finished high school at New Hope High in Madison County. After graduation from the University of North Alabama, Mrs. Hooker taught 37 years in the Huntsville City School system retiring from Blossomwood Elementary.

Mrs. Hooker was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church and a founder of Trinity United Methodist Church. She was a member and past president of The Study Circle, a member of the Junior Welfare League and the Buttercup Garden Club. She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Robert Mason Hooker; her parents, Solomon Leslie and Mary Lena Mathison; her bother, Leslie Kermit Mathison and her granddaughter, Amanda Grace Taylor Watson.

Survivors include her daughter, Mary Adelaide ‘Perky’ Taylor and husband, Jerry, of Huntsville; son, Robert Mason ‘Bobby’ Hooker of Nashville, TN.

Visitation will be from noon to 2:00 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Coy Hallmark officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Amanda Taylor Watson Graduate Award at the First United Methodist Church, 120 Greene St., Huntsville, AL 35801.
