Shirley Lexl Carson Jackson of Huntsville, 97, passed away Sunday. She was born in Conehatta, Mississippi, to Martin Neil Carson and Anthomas Sheely Carson.
Survivors include daughter, Anthomas Sheely Jackson Cooper and husband, William Ralph Cooper of Huntsville; grandchildren, William Thomas Cooper and wife, Patricia Kay, of Denver, CO, Andrew Shawn Cooper of Annandale, VA and Matthew Eugene Cooper of Denver, CO; great-grandson, Joseph William Cooper of Denver; brother-in-law, Lavell Jackson; and nieces and nephews, Michael Loper, Neal Carson, Martin Carson, Kerry Jackson, Konnie Collum and Kelley Jackson and their families.
Preceding her in death was her husband, Oliver Welton Jackson of Huntsville; brothers, Marshall Carson of Conehatta, MS, and Billy Carson of Taylorsville, MS; sister, Thelma Loper of Fairfax, VA; and brother-in-law, Melvin Jackson of Douglas, AL.
Shirley loved her family and friends and her Holmes Street Methodist Church family. She graduated from Mississippi State College for Women and taught school for several years, then moved from Marion, Alabama, to Huntsville in 1956 and worked for a short while for Huntsville Hospital before starting work for the Army at Redstone Arsenal. She retired in 1980 from the Civilian Personnel Office with 20 years of service. In retirement she painted many beautiful china pieces for over 30 years that now adorn her home. She also enjoyed being a member and an officer of the HAYLARC ladies amateur radio club.
Visitation will be from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Wednesday at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Holmes Street Methodist Church. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. at New Hope Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Douglas, AL.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Holmes Street Methodist Church or to the Wounded Warrior Project.
