Visitation will be from 6 to 7 at the church. Burial will be Thursday, February 7, 2013, at 10 a.m. at Roselawn Cemetery.
Mrs. Lamon, who died February 4, 2013, at Huntsville Hospital, was born December 18, 1930, in Birmingham to Carl and Annie Massey. Gwendolyn was a devoted wife and mother, inspiring others in her community and church as she faced the challenges of lifelong blindness. She graduated from Talladega School for the Blind, where she met her husband, Reese Lamon. The couple made their home in Birmingham. For more than 30 years Gwen patiently cared for and encouraged their disabled son, helping him live long past his expected lifespan. After retirement, Reese and Gwen moved to Decatur.
Gwen was a gifted musician who started playing the piano at age five. She enjoyed sharing her talents and served as organist and occasional vocal soloist at Grace River Community Church. She was well known for leading sing-along’s, both at her home and at the Terrace at Priceville, where she regularly entertained the residents.
A dedicated church member, Gwen had hosted monthly prayer services at her home for many years. She had recently been elected as an Elder at the church and was looking forward to serving in her new capacity.
Survivors include her uncle, Charles Daugherty of Gardendale; aunt, Jo Henton of Florida; sister-in-law, Bertha Swatzell of Huntsville; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Reese Lamon; her son, Harold Gene Lamon; her father, Carl Massey and her mother, Annie Massey, both of Birmingham.
The family would like to acknowledge the love and support of Gwen’s faithful caregivers, Frances Pitt and Pam Mills.
Pallbearers will be church members.
Memorial contributions may be sent to Grace River Community Church, 2018 Cleveland Avenue SW, Decatur, AL 35601.
