William “Bill” Edgar Powers, Jr., 88, of Huntsville, passed away at his home on December 21. Bill was born in Birmingham and graduated from West End High School in 1952. He was a proud member of the U.S. Navy, serving as an electronics technician. In 1962, Bill graduated from Auburn University with a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering. He spent the majority of his career working as an electronics engineer at the U.S. Army Missile Command, retiring in 1993. Bill was a charter member of Willowbrook Baptist Church and enjoyed playing golf, gardening, spending time with family, and cheering for the Auburn Tigers. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Shirley; two sons, Leslie of Fredericksburg, VA and Dale of Rowlett, TX; daughter, Sharon, of East Asia; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, William E. Powers, Sr., and Mary Leslie Powers, and his sister, Janet Powers. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 28, from 3 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. The service will be held on Wednesday, December 29 at 10 a.m. in the Laughlin Chapel, with Rev. Doug Merchant officiating. A graveside service officiated by Dr. Leslie Powers and interment will follow at 2 p.m. at Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham.
