Funeral Services for Mr. Raymond Neal Camp, age 77 of Coleta Valley, will be on Tuesday, November 30, 2021 at 11:00 A.M. at Benefield Funeral Home in Ashland with Andrew Camp speaking. Burial will follow at the Bethlehem Methodist Cemetery.
Mr. Camp passed away on Saturday, November 27, 2021 at the Grandview Medical Center. He was born in Talladega County, but spent the majority of his life in Clay County. A 1962 graduate of Bibb Graves High School, Mr. Camp also attended and graduated from Southern Union State Community College with his Associates Degree, and then transferred and graduated from Jacksonville State University and received his B.S. and Master’s degrees in Education. While in High School and his early 20’s, he was in a band called “The Bonfires” for a number of years, playing the Tenor Guitar. After college, Mr. Camp served as a teacher at Little Heflin and Millerville Elementary before eventually serving as a teacher and Principal for Bibb Graves High School for over 30 years. He also taught at Trinity Christian Academy for 10 years following his retirement from Bibb Graves. 39 years ago, Mr. Camp and Yank Hendon founded the Coleta Valley Volunteer Fire Department and he was also instrumental in obtaining the deeds to Bibb Graves High School and had been renovating the former High School to its former glory. He was the Chairman of the Board for the Bibb Graves High School Alumni and Friends, Association. Mr. Camp enjoyed Auburn University athletics and the LA Dodgers, and enjoyed decorating for Christmas. He and his wife participated in Home Church and loved studying his Bible. His family was his Pride and Joy, and enjoyed instructing and entertaining his grandchildren. He loved his family gatherings and serving his community.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Gaynelle Smith Camp; three daughters: Tracey Camp Smith (James Timothy), Rachel Camp Guinn (Alan), and Angela Camp Lee (Greg), all of Coleta Valley; two sons: Phillip Alan Camp (Susan) of Coleta Valley and William Andrew Camp (Abra) of Wadley; 12 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; lifelong friends: Billy Morgan, Fred Jenkins, Jerry Colquitt, and Dr. Stanley Horn, plus extended family.
Active Pallbearers will be his grandsons: Logan Camp, Thomas Cagle, Alden Guinn, Aaron Smith, Jarrod Camp, and Tyler Hunnicutt.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Yank Hendon, Craig Wesley, John Stivers, Richard Bearden, Phillip Wesley, Stanley Strickland, Roy Johnson, and Dr. C.O. Grinstead.
His visitation will take place on Tuesday, November 30, 2021 at Benefield Funeral Home in Ashland from 10:00 A.M. until service time at 11:00 A.M.
