GURLEY-Investigators from the state have taken over the investigation of a shooting case that took place late on Thursday night, November 17.
A Madison County Sheriff’s Deputy allegedly shot Cory Wayne Vell, 39 after the Gurley Police Department requested backup on a domestic incident at Gurley Gardens Apartments around 10PM on Thursday. While officers were interviewing witnesses a man approached the Gurley Police Officers and Madison County Deputies. According to investigators it is believed the man was connected to the domestic dispute. it is unclear as to what transpired next and the incident ended with the deputy firing his weapon and hitting the man. No police personnel were injured in this incident.
According to a spokesperson from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, Vell was injured and transported to Huntsville Hospital for treatment of his non-life-threatening injuries.
Per Madison County Police Protocol the deputy has been placed on administrative leave.
Statement from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency regarding the incident:
“On Thursday, Nov. 18, at the request of the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, Special Agents with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) are investigating an officer‐involved shooting, which involved a Madison County Sheriff’s Deputy. The suspect, identified as Cory Wayne Vell, 39, was injured and transported to a local hospital for treatment of non‐life‐threatening injuries. No officers were injured over the course of the incident.
Nothing further is available as the investigation is ongoing. Once complete, the findings will be turned over to the Madison County District Attorney’s Office.”
