On Saturday, October 9, 2021 a golden heart stopped and Heaven’s Angels came to carry Dorothy Jean (George) Swafford home to be with her Lord and Savior. Dorothy was born June 12, 1936 in Huntland, TN to Earl Clay and Willie May (Kramer) George. She was the fifth of six siblings and the only girl having five older brothers and one younger. Growing up in Beans Creek, she attended Huntland School and she would tell you growing up with six brothers was an adventure in itself. It was also in Beans Creek where she met the love of her life, Nolon Swafford. They were later married on December 28, 1954 and to that love story, they had four children, Ric Allen Swafford (Ricky Lee Messer) of Kennesaw, GA, Regina Kay and husband, Doug Teel of Elora, TN, Angela Pickett Maxwell of Decherd and Mark Nolon & wife, Debbie Swafford of Winchester, TN. Dorothy was the most loving and giving lady you could ever meet. She was a good hardworking Christian woman that had the sweetest heart and would do anything for anyone she could. She was five feet tall but she was larger than life and was a ray of sunshine when she walked in a room. She loved to cook for anyone that entered her door, especially for her family and church. And what a cook she was! She could make the best fried chicken, homemade biscuits and cobblers you could ever put in your mouth. She loved canning vegetables from her garden that was usually big enough to feed half of Huntland. She loved working in her yard and tending to her flowers. She had a green thumb and had Christmas Cactuses that she talked to and they bloomed all year round. She even grew a pineapple once that she was so proud of. She was always on the go, loving to go shopping or out to eat. She especially loved taking trips to the beach with a good book to read or going to Gatlinburg with her family. She loved to sew and quilt, watch the hummingbirds from her front porch and she loved to laugh. She could be so funny. But most importantly, she loved the Lord. She served Him and her church for 57 plus years, being a member of Beech Grove/Huntland Missionary Baptist Church. Her most precious joy was her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They were her heart. Grandsons, Eric and wife, Jennifer Banks, Chance and wife, Heather Pickett of Estill Springs, Brandon and wife, Brittany Swafford of Estill Springs, and Jake Swafford of Winchester. Her only granddaughter that she so adored, Ashlyn Maylee (Pickett) and husband, Nick Novotny of Irvine, CA. She was also blessed with a bonus granddaughter, Brandy Maddox of Huntland, TN. Great-grandchildren that were the apple of her eye, Matthew and Tyler Banks, Olivia and Brantley Pickett, Chandler and Cayson Banks, Anna, Axel and Leyton Swafford, Dustin and Emma Swafford, and also, Brooklyn Swafford Elliott. Last but not least, a precious great-grandson who is on the way that she was so excited about and looked so forward to holding him in her arms, Everett Novotny. She was also preceded in death other than her parents and beloved husband, by her six brothers, Arliss, Amos, Earl, Nile (Monk), John (Bush) and Orgie George; two precious grandsons, Dusty (Swafford) Pickett and Christopher Banks; one very special great-grandson, Hunter Swafford and son-in-law, Von Maxwell. Left to cherish her memory, she is also survived by a very special niece that she loved as her own, Barbara Campbell, her fur baby, Ruby and grandpups, Bella, Sassy, Diamond and Penny. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be 5-8 pm Tuesday at Moore-Cortner Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 1 pm Wednesday, October 13, 2021 at Moore-Cortner Chapel with Bro. Bruce Shockley officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Carmel Cemetery.
