John Marshall Crutcher, Sr. age 86, of Athens, Alabama passed away Thursday, April 23, 2020.

Johnny was born August 20, 1933 in Athens to William Baker, Sr., and Julia Hurst Crutcher. He graduated from Athens High School in 1951 and enrolled in Auburn University where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta. In 1953 he enlisted in the United States Air Force, during the Korean Conflict. After serving his country he returned Auburn University and graduated in 1958.

He was an active member of Athens First United Methodist Church and the Logan Bible Class. He is a retired Athens City employee who spent many years serving the city in various positions including, Athens City Clerk and Athens City Department of Cemetery and Parks, and Recreation. Following his retirement, Mr. Crutcher continued to be very active in the Athens community serving on the Athens City Council, substituting for Athens City Schools, delivering Meals on Wheels and supporting the Alabama Veteran’s Museum.

Johnny was proceeded in death by his first wife, Beverly Berry Crutcher, their infant daughter, his parents, and his sister Margaret Ann Crutcher White.

He is survived by his wife, Ann Wood Crutcher, his children Julie Crutcher Edwards, (Mark) of Birmingham, AL, Christy Crutcher of Alpharetta, GA, Marshall Crutcher of Ashville, NC, Dr. Bill Neese of Troy AL, Ray Neese (Carlene) of Athens, Lee Neese, of Decatur, AL and his brother, William Baker Crutcher, Jr. (Joe Ann) of Athens, four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren along with several nieces and nephews and a very special friend to the entire Crutcher family, Atchie Wilson.

Johnny’s love for his family will live on through the laughter and wonderful memories that they will share with each other for many years to come.

His love for his community will also be remembered by the many people whose lives he enriched.

A private family service will be held in the Prayer Garden at First United Methodist Church, with Spry Funeral Home assisting the family.

In remembrance of Johnny’s wonderful life, memorial contributions may be made to the Special Music Ministry Fund at Athens First United Methodist Church or to the Alabama First United Methodist Church Children’s Home.
