Doug Jones for Senate campaign launches statewide student organizing program to mobilize young people ahead of election day
BIRMINGHAM – Today, the Doug Jones for Senate campaign announced the launch of a program to train, support and prepare student organizers on college campuses across Alabama ahead of the 2020 election season. The student organizers will engage with students across Alabama to educate, inform and engage with young voters and help re-elect Doug Jones to the United States Senate in 2020.
As on-campus representatives of the Doug Jones campaign, student organizers will work with volunteers and campus clubs to educate and register voters, share Doug’s vision of One Alabama and support ongoing digital organizing efforts. UNA is one of several colleges and universities across Alabama that is heading into the election year with a student organizer represented on campus.
“Student organizing is one of the most effective ways to get young people engaged in the Democratic process,” said U.S. Senator Doug Jones. “This dedicated and talented group of young folks represents our next generation of leaders. I’m encouraged by their enthusiasm and I’m incredibly proud to have these students on my team as we get all hands on deck to share our vision of One Alabama and win in November.”
In the Senate, Doug Jones has been focused on securing and expanding funding for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in Alabama and across the country. In December, Doug’s legislation to secure permanent funding for HBCUs was signed into law by President Trump, providing the security that these institutions need to continue educating Alabama’s next generation of leaders. Along with HBCU funding, Doug’s bipartisan legislation to simplify and streamline the federal student aid (FAFSA) application was also signed into law. This legislation will help ensure that students can get all of the financial aid they qualify for and will help set them up for a stronger financial future as they start their lives upon graduation.
