MUSCLE SHOALS & PHIL CAMPBELL – Northwest-Shoals Community College (NW-SCC) and Northwest Alabama high schools are partnering through the Alabama Community College System’s (ACCS) Clean Home Alabama Initiative, November 1-11, to help beautify the state.
As part of the ACCS, NW-SCC will host an event, Clean Home Shoals, on Saturday, November 9, 2019. The College will choose one mile of land close to the Phil Campbell (College Road) and Shoals Campus (George Wallace Blvd.) to pick up litter. Partnering high schools will do the same in close proximity to their high schools or they will have the opportunity to join College faculty, staff, and students.

“We are encouraging all of our area high schools and community to join us between November 1st and 11th, and give back to our great state through this beautification initiative,” said NW-SCC President Dr. Glenda Colagross. “We are our area’s community college, and we see this as a great opportunity to give back.”
Last month (September 16, 2019), Governor Kay Ivey signed the official proclamation that launched the Clean Home Alabama initiative. Through this initiative, Alabama’s community colleges are partnering with residents and community organizations in every county of the state for this college-led effort to help beautify the state’s natural landscapes, growing infrastructure, and expanding communities.

According to ACCS Chancellor Jimmy H. Baker, serving the area communities is at the heart of this initiative. “Community is so much a part of what our colleges do each day that it’s even in our name,” Baker said. “Alabama’s community colleges are located within every region of the state, which means we are perfectly positioned to organize and execute an effort of this magnitude to help maintain ‘Alabama the Beautiful’ during our state’s bicentennial year.”
Twelve (12) area schools have committed to partnering with NW-SCC on this initiative and they include: Vina High School, Tharptown High School, Russellville High School, Russellville Elementary, West Elementary – Russellville, Waterloo High School, Lexington High School, Phil Campbell High School, Belgreen High School, Colbert County High School, McBride Elementary School, and Red Bay High School.
