Lucy Evelyn Sheffer Spiceland, 85, of Muscle Shoals, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 25, 2018. The funeral service will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home in Mayfield, Kentucky with David Steele of Muscle Shoals officiating. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of service. Interment will be in Highland Park Cemetery in Mayfield, Kentucky.
Lucy Spiceland was a native of Clay, Kentucky and a graduate of Murray State College, holding a Master’s Degree in Business. Lucy valued education highly and impacted the lives of many throughout her career as a teacher. The majority of her lengthy career in education was spent in Illinois. Lucy was very active in her home church Woodward Avenue Baptist Church in Muscle Shoals where she served as a Sunday school teacher and participant in a church musical group. Lucy’s love of travel was evident as she took many trips with her children and grandchildren, led many student groups abroad, and visited the holy land. Lucy had a passion for reading and spending intentional time with her family. Recognizing a need in the community where her grandchildren lived, Lucy provided the initial funding for Rejoice Christian School in Owasso, Oklahoma.
Lucy was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Jack Nolin Spiceland of Mayfield, Kentucky; her daughter, Dr. Sharon Connell of Muscle Shoals; her parents, Eldridge Guy and Annie Pearl Sheffer of Clay, Kentucky; her sisters, June Cherry of Sterling, Illinois and Nellie Howard of Rockford, Illinois; and her brothers-in-law, Harold Cherry of Sterling, Illinois, Bobby Spiceland of Dover, Tennessee and Robert Hicks of Murray, Kentucky.
Survivors include her daughters, Gayle Spiceland Doersam (Gary) of Warren, Illinois and Beverly Spiceland Prentice (Steve) of Owasso, Oklahoma; her son-in-law, Dr. Keith Connell of Muscle Shoals; her brother, Guy Sheffer (Lois) of Mount Vernon, Indiana and a sister, Helen Hill of Morganfield, Kentucky; two sisters-in law, Doris Spiceland of Dover, Tennessee and Peggie Hicks of Murray, Kentucky; 11 grandchildren, Dr. Chris Doersam (Kat), Emily Doersam, Dr. Tyler Doersam (Michelle), Dr. Joshua Prentice (Ashley), Dr. Caleb Prentice (Danielle), Ashley Rose (Brian), Tiffany Prentice soon to be Wyatt (Phil), Nathan Prentice, Jonathan Prentice, Claire Babba (Simon) and Nolin Connell; five great-grandchildren, with another on the way, Adrianna and Tyler Doersam, Jude, Annabel, and Leo Prentice, and baby Babba (due in January 2019); and numerous nieces and nephews.
