Funeral service for James Daniel “Dan” Prater, age 87, of Decatur, will be Friday, April 6, 2018, 2:00 p.m. at Shelton Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Roger Jenkins officiating. The family will receive friends 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. Interment will be in Roselawn Cemetery.
Mr. Prater, who died Tuesday, April 3, 2018, at his residence, was born November 10, 1930, in Morgan County, to Daniel Minor Prater and Birdie May Gray Prater. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Ramona Turner Prater, and one brother, Clarence Ray Prater. He worked as Utilities Supervisor for Monsanto, and also enjoyed cattle farming.
He is survived by two sons, Danny Prater of Columbus, MS, and Tony Prater (Sandra) of Moulton; one daughter, Karon Edney (Douglas) of Decatur; three sisters, Nell Brazier of Decatur, Jewel McCulloch of Decatur, and Margie Cockrell of Birmingham; six grandchildren, Laura Cagle Price (Jeff), Emily Cagle Wright (Brian), Megan Prater Wicker (Eric), Alan Cagle (Elaine), Wesley Prater (Ashley), and Todd Prater (Susan); 14 great-grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces.
Pallbearers will be grandsons and great-grandson.
The family would like to express their special thanks to caregiver, Helen Holyfield, and to Hospice of North Alabama for their kind and compassionate care of Mr. Prater.
