Dr. Carl Emil Winkler passed away on December 8,2017 in Huntsville, Alabama. Carl grew up in New Hampshire and graduated from West High School in Manchester. He received a BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of New Hampshire in 1949 and his MS (EE) and PhD (EE) from the University of Alabama. He began his career working for the Public Service Company of NH from 1949-1951. He came to Huntsville by being drafted by President Truman into the U. S. Army in 1951 and was ordered to report to Redstone Arsenal to work on the Army’s newly created Science & Professional Program with the German Rocket Team. He transferred to the newly formed NASA in 1960. He had a long, distinguished career with NASA working in the Astrionics Lab, the Space Sciences Lab, the Hubble Space Telescope and the Advanced X-Ray Astrophysics Facility. He was honored with NASA’s Forty-Five Year Service Award.
Carl enjoyed music and loved to sing with his wife Margaret and was very active in the community as a past President ofthe Hunts- ville Community Chorus and as a former member of the Huntsville Symphony Board of Trustees. He always had an optimistic outlook on life and was a dedicated member of the Huntsville Optimist Club for over 50 years. His greatest passion was spending time with his wife, daughter and grandchildren!
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Porter Winkler. He is survived by his daughter, Anne Winkler Burkett, granddaughter, Allison Burkett and grandson, Graham Burkett, all of Huntsville. Out-of-town survivors include his sister, Norma Winkler Moskey of Connecticut and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at Berryhill Funeral Home on Friday, December 15, 10:30 a.m. The family will receive friends for one half hour before service time. Interment will be at Maple Hill Cemetery. No graveside service is planned.
