James Saft, 52, of Huntsville, previously of London, NYC, and Chicago, died peacefully in Huntsville Hospital on Monday. Jim was a gifted writer and columnist for Reuters, where he had worked since 1995. He had a wonderful sense of humor and loved the Chicago Cubs, poker, and singing. A Chicago native, he attended Francis W. Parker School, where he met lifelong friends, was a member of the golf team, and a columnist for the Parker Weekly. He graduated from Vassar College, where he met his wife of 25 years. He and Rebecca were members of the Barbara Pym Society. With his daughter, Eleanor, Jim earned his blackbelt in taekwondo. He gave his daughter, Virginia, a strong sense of adventure and independence. He was preceded in death by his father, James Harry Saft.
Survivors include his wife, Rebecca Moore; daughters, Eleanor Saft and Virginia Saft; mother, Virginia Saft Mond; sister, Elizabeth Saft (Emilio Ferrer); nieces, Lucia Ferrer and Alice Ferrer; mother-in-law, Margaret Moore; aunt, Ann Reed; cousins, Julia Gould (Porter), Stuart Smith, Elliott Colebeck (Laura), Edward Colebeck (Mickie), and Reese Pinney (Elizabeth); and beloved dogs, Rufus and Mildred.
Visitation will be from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18th, at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. A celebration of life and reception will follow at 6:00 p.m. at Merrimack Hall, 3320 Triana Blvd.
