Jean Barclift Handley, 88 of the Union Chapel Community, died Monday October 2, 2017 at UAB in Birmingham.
Mrs. Handley was born September 27, 1929 in Marshall County to Bud Barclift and Lucy Hipp Barclift. She was a graduate of Arab High School and received her Master’s Degree from Jacksonville State, Peabody College which is now Vanderbilt University. Mrs. Handley was a teacher in the area public schools until her retirement. Her husband, Billy Thomas Handley, preceded her in death on April 30, 2006. She enjoyed crocheting and gardening. She loved her time teaching in Joppa, Union Grove and Arab schools.
She was a member of Mt. Oak United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law: Jerry Handley and Sandra; her daughter and son-in-law: Kathy Ellenburg and Mike; her grandchildren: Adam Ellenburg and Blair, Abby Lightsey and David, Jarrod Handley and Brittani, Brittnee Ward and Clark, Jeremy Handley and Brittany; great grandchildren: Jay Handley Lightsey, Mallory Ward, Jac Handley, Emma Handley, Charlie Handley and Hunter Handley and a brother: Bobby Bolden. She was preceded in death by her husband: Billy Thomas Handley; her parents: Bud and Lucy Barclift; a brother: Warren Barclift and a sister: Ann Myers.
Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday October 5, 2017 at Arab Heritage Memorial Chapel with Brother: Perry Albritten officiating and eulogy by Jerry Handley. Burial will be in Arab Memorial Cemetery with Arab Heritage Memorial Chapel, directing.
Pallbearers will be Adam Ellenburg, Jarrod Handley, Jeremy Handley, Clark Ward, Kaleb Spann and Quinton Spann.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Junior Spann, Carla Spann, Kenneth Bates, Karen Bates and Sandra Grace.
Visitation will be 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. Thursday October 5, 2017 at Arab Heritage Memorial Chapel, prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers the family request memorial gifts to the UAB Center for Palliative Care, Room 219, CH19, 1530 3rd Ave South Birmingham, Al. 35294-24041.
