ETOWAH COUNTY-The Etowah County Sheriff’s Office has issued a statement in the discharging of a firearm at a law enforcement officer on Friday, June 24:

” The Gadsden man arrested for shooting a firearm at law enforcement officers is now charged with attempted murder, according to Sheriff Todd Entrekin.
Jeremy Abbas Ronagh, 35, Gadsden, is charged with four counts of attempted murder, one count of ex-felon in possession of a firearm and one count of possession of a firearm with an altered serial number, all are felonies.
Sheriff Entrekin said, “With a lengthy criminal history, this violent felon should not have been out on the streets. I hope that the legislature will revisit the sentencing guidelines so that they work to keep violent criminals in prison, not out.”
Ronagh shot at officers, shortly before 4 p.m. on Friday, June 24, after an investigator was attempting to speak with him about a burglary. The incident occurred on Owens Drive, off of Fairview Road in Gadsden.
Officers returned fire injuring Ronagh. He was transported to a Birmingham hospital where he was later released and booked into the Etowah County Detention Center.
“I am proud of how these officers handled this incident and am glad that they went home safe to their families,” Sheriff Entrekin said. “These officers face dangerous situations daily and they never know what the next call may bring.”
Another man, John Michael Smith, 36, Glencoe, was also arrested at the scene on Friday for a non-support warrant.
Oxford Police Department is investigating the incident. Jacksonville State University’s Center for Applied Forensics collected and is preserving evidence.”
