Mrs. Nettie Lee Roberson was born on Dec. 19, 1917, to the late Leander and Nettie (Thompson) Williams in Florence, Alabama. She transitioned from this life on Friday, Nov. 6, 2015, at Florence Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility.
Nettie Lee graduated from Burrell Normal School in 1936 and was recognized at the 2012 Burrell Slater Reunion as the sole surviving member of her class. She married George Roberson in 1947 and moved to Pocatello, Idaho where she attended nursing school in 1952 to receive the LPN degree (Licensed Practical Nurse). Nettie and George lived and worked in Toledo, Ohio until 1973 when they returned to Alabama to care for her parents. Nettie Lee continued to work in the area as an LPN and later as a volunteer at Mitchell Hollingsworth. In addition to her volunteer work, she was very active in her church life. Having been baptized at the age of 12, Nettie Lee joined the Mt. Zion AME Church and continued her African Methodist Episcopal faith in Toledo where she served as a stewardess for ten years. When she returned to Florence in 1973, she united in 1974 with the Greater Saint Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church where she served as stewardess for 35 years before becoming a stewardess emeritus.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George; and brother, Luther H. Williams Sr.
Left to cherish the memories of this sweet and gentle spirit are nephew and caregivers, Lincoln (Dr. Fredonia B.) Williams, Huntsville, Alabama; goddaughter, Angela (Jeff) Tennessen, Birmingham, Alabama; nieces, Marjorie Cooley, Tuscumbia, Alabama, Janice Robinson, Geneva Williams, and Willa Williams, Florence, Alabama, and Deidre (the Rev. Mark) Zockheem, Romulus, Michigan; nephews, William Robinson, Tuscumbia, Alabama, Darryl Haney, Wayne, Michigan, and Gerald Haney, Oak Park, Michigan; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2015, 11 a.m., Greater Saint Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church, Florence, Alabama, with Reverend Alvelyn Sanders officiating. The body will be placed in the church one hour prior. Burial will be in Tri Cities Memorial Gardens, Florence, Alabama.
