ATHENS-The Athens Police were called to the Budget Inn on US 31 on Wednesday morning, July 22. A shooting had been reported.
Here is the statement regarding the events and the arrest of two suspects from Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson:
“This morning shortly before 03:30 the police department received a call that 2 shots had been fired at the Budget Inn on US 31. When officers arrived the owner of the motel told officers the there was a person shot in one of the rooms. Officers entered the room and located a male unresponsive. Officers were eventually able to wake the man and determine he had not been shot he had only passed out due to taking an unknown medication. Officers then noticed a bullet casing lying on the floor in the room. They also located a bullet hole going thru the wall of room into the next room. In the next room officers located an exit hole in the wall left by the bullet. There were people in the next room sleeping when the shots were fired however no one was injured in that room. Officers then started talking to people that had gathered outside. While talking to one of the men about what had occurred the man told officers he had been shot in the leg. The man is in his early twenty’s and is from
Athens. He gave officers a description of a car and told officers he had been shot by one of the females in the car. Officers immediately put out a BOLO for the vehicle and the females. Sgt. Dusty Meadows located the car on US 31 near Tanner. He stopped the car on Huntsville Brownsferry Road near Summers Road. In the vehicle was two females one 17 years old and the other 19 years old. Both females were taken to the police department for questioning.
Investigators later learned the shooting victim and the male that was passed out in the motel room had gone to Decatur to get a “large quantity” Xanax, I do not have a number. Investigators have since learned the two females went to the Budget Inn to steal the Xanax. After the victim went to sleep the 19 year old attempted to take the Xanax from his pocket. When he woke up she shot him in the leg. Were unsure at this time how many pills were taken by the females. They also took an undetermined amount of cash.
