The funeral service for Charles “Doc” Thompson, 89, of Athens, will be Thursday, July 9, 2015, at 4 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Athens, with the Reverend Michael Bush, the Reverend David Palmer and the Reverend Jaina Anderson officiating and McConnell Funeral Home directing. Burial will be in Athens City Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the church.
Mr. Thompson, who died Monday, was born July 16, 1925, in Athens to James Roger Thompson and Clara V. Moyers Thompson. He graduated from Athens High School. He attended Limestone Church that was built by his grandfather, James Roger Thompson. Doc was a member of First Presbyterian Church for 80 years, and served his church as a deacon, elder and trustee. His mission in life was to love his Lord, his family, friends and country.
Mr. Thompson served his country during World War II in China as a member of the United States Navy. He went to Washington, D.C., on the Honor flight in 2011. He was a member of the Athens Lions Club and volunteered for Habitat for Humanity. Mr. Thompson was the owner of Thompson Landscaping. He is preceded in death by his parents; and wife, Judy Burleson Thompson; his sisters, Clarita Young (Arnold) and Grace Glaze (Crutcher); and brother, James Thompson (Ann).
Survivors include two daughters, Kay Barnes (Jack) and Janet Poole (Ronnie), both of Athens; four grandchildren, Jamie Poole, Sarah Poole, Justin Barnes and Luke Barnes; great-grandson, Lakin Barnes; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
Pallbearers will be Justin Barnes, Luke Barnes, Jamie Poole, Dick Smith, Bill Anderson, Billy Hargrove, Larry Kennum and Neal Flum.
Honorary pallbearers will be First Presbyterian Church fellowship Sunday school class.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Limestone Church c/o of Robert Evans, 14919 Reid Road, Athens, AL 35611.
