James “Mike” Franks Sr., 68, passed on to his Savior’s arms on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, at Sanctuary Hospice in Tupelo. He was born September 11, 1958, to the late James Carlton Franks and the late Edna Ruth Hamm Franks. From his earliest days, he was drawn to the roar of an engine and the thrill of the track and spent a lifetime in drag racing beside his father. What began as time shared with Carlton grew into a life’s work. Mike went on to own and operate Fulton Dragway and Byhalia Raceway, welcoming racers, families, and fans to the sport he loved so dearly.

Away from the track, Mike operated Franks Automotive in Fulton alongside his parents until it closed in 2018, working side by side with Sharon, Carlton, and Edna for many years.

Mike’s love of cars ran deep, and he had a special place in his heart for the Willy’s. Over the years he built an impressive collection, each car a reflection of his passion, his craftsmanship, and his eye for what made a machine special.

Mike’s faith grew to be as much a part of the track as the engines. As the announcer at the weekly races, he would pray over the loudspeaker that any racer who did not know Christ as Savior would accept Him. Week after week, those prayers rang out across the track, a reflection of the heart he carried for everyone who came through the gates. Mike was a member of Salem Baptist Church.

As much as Mike loved drag racing and cars, the only thing he loved more was God and his family.

Mike is survived by his devoted wife, Sharon Wood Franks; sons, Mikey Franks Jr. and Cayden Mitchell; his one and only grandchild, Nora Ruth Franks, who held a special place in his heart. His favorite title was “Papaw”.

A private family service will be held at Senter Funeral Home in Fulton.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made in Mike’s honor to Sanctuary Hospice House at www.sanctuaryhospicehouse.com

Pallbearers will be his brothers-in-law, Jeff Franks, Larry Tierce, Eddie Moore, and Chris Strange.

Mike will be remembered for his love of the sport, his devotion to his family, and the many lives he touched along the track. He will be deeply missed.
