“Only one life, twill soon be past. Only what’s done for Christ will last.” This quote describes the outlook of an incredible woman. Dorothy Alexander Turberville, of Sheffield, 86, died Tuesday, May 26, 2015. Her family will receive friends Thursday, 12-2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, Sheffield. The funeral service will follow in the sanctuary. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
Dot was born April 17, 1929 in Bear Creek, Alabama to Alvin and Rosa Alexander. She graduated from Phillips High School and continued her education at Florence State Teachers’ College where she earned a B.A. in Education. Being an adventurous young woman, she moved to Washington D.C. to work for the F.B.I. Dorothy then taught at her alma mater, Phillips High School, as well as Talladega, Russellville, and Deshler High Schools. She later became head librarian of the Sheffield Public Library.
Dot married Travis Turberville on June 9, 1957. They were married almost 58 years and raised three daughters.
Dot had a passionate commitment to her family, community, and faith. She served in numerous church, youth, and charitable organizations. We remember Dot for the love that she gave to all and for her tireless service to others.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Alvin and Rosa; sisters, Era Alexander and Mildred McAllister; and brothers, Jimmy and Joe Alexander.
Survivors include her husband, Travis A. Turberville; daughters: Sharon Romine (Richard), Lisa Lindsey, Tracy Mims (Dennis); brother, Arnold “Buck” Alexander; sister, Francis Wilson Lindley; grandchildren: Travis and Thomas Lindsey, Lexi and Jeffrey Romine, Sam and Dorothy Kate Mims; great-grandchild, Harper Tate Lindsey; and very special nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers are Travis and Thomas Lindsey, Jeffrey Romine, Sam Mims, Brian Lindsey and Dennis Mims.
Honorary Pallbearers are members of the Howard Jagger’s Sunday School Class.
In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, The Salvation Army, or First United Methodist Church, Sheffield would be appreciated.
