TUSCUMBIA-The Colbert County Historical Landmarks Foundation (CCHLF) will hold its Fall Quarterly meeting on meet Sunday, November 16, 2014, at 2:30 p.m. in the Helen Keller Library Conference Room, located at 511 Main St., in Tuscumbia.
Program speaker Joel Mize’s Power-point presentation “Tar Sands Strip Mining: The threats to historic landmarks in Colbert County” will discuss the impact of strip mining in northwest Alabama encompassing Belle Mont Mansion, LaGrange, bluff shelters, Cane Creek Preserve and the following 3 historic roads: Byler Road, Jackson Military Road and the Gaines Trace. The threats to public health and the environment will be further amplified at this session.
Joel, a native of Haleyville area (Marion & Winston counties) received his Bachelors of Science degree from the University of Alabama in Chemical Engineering and MBA from Pepperdine University. A distinguished career spanning 50 years in petroleum energy processing and leadership roles within the industry include Alabama, Texas, Louisiana, Colorado and world-wide projects and a Professorship at the Colorado School of Mines. He is a historian and genealogist, and has held positions as Vice President and President with the Houston Texas Genealogy Forum; co-authored “Mize Genealogy in America (1976)”and authored “Putnam & Ramsey Family and Genealogy (1995).”
The meeting is free to the public. Refreshments will be served at the meeting’s conclusion.
