_MG_0096 copyCHEROKEE – In the last year or so, this close-knit town, Cherokee has been working real hard on developing an image of a place that has a lot to be proud of. Not too long ago, the Industrial Development Board unveiled two new “Welcome To Cherokee” signs. But Cherokee didn’t stop there. This past Saturday, July 5th, the town turned out to dedicate their new stage. and it was one great party!

The Industrial Development Board, with some cash from the State, and lots of sweat-equity from the residents built this beautiful stage on the spot where the old Town Hall once stood. With the exception of the roof, all the labor was furnished by volunteers. Mr. Biehl and the boys from the Cherokee High School Ag. Dept..  the city employees, Doug Greenhill and Ray McGee and the Industrial Development Board Members, Thomas Holiday, Teresa Malone, Troy Rutland, Bill Graham, Jane Goss, Jeff Dover and Nancy Giles, who all have had an active part in this project.

One of the volunteers was singled out for a special award. Industrial Development Board Member, 83 year old, Bill Graham was singled out for a special award. Danny McWilliams, presenter, said this about Mr. Graham’s efforts, “One Industrial Development Board Member, 83 year old, cancer survivor, BILL GRAHAM, has worked EVERY DAY, when there was work happening on this lot, and many days, he worked alone. Some days, he was building the steps in his garage, to be installed, once the roof was in place. Tonight we want to present him with this special award, for his devotion to this project.” And with that, Mr. Graham was presented with a ceremonial hammer.

All afternoon and into the evening, music streamed from the stage with some great songs from local singers, such as Paula Preston. Paula started the day with a great rendition of, “I’m Proud To Be An American.” Lots of patriotism… Lots of fellowship… Lots of fun.

The Quad-Cities Daily was on hand for the festivities. Here are the EVENT PHOTOS.
