TUPELO-The National Park Service is set to begin work replacing three buildings on the Natchez Trace Parkway. The Visitor Contact Station at Colbert Ferry near milepost 327 in Alabama and the comfort station at Pharr Mounds near milepost 286 will be replaced. The service station building at the Jeff Busby site near milepost 193 in Mississippi will be demolished and replaced with a modern comfort station facility. Construction activities are scheduled to begin on October 28, 2013 and should be completed by May 2014.
The Parkway was designated as an All-American Road and National Scenic Byway by the Department of Transportation in 1996, and replacement of the facilities at the Colbert Ferry and Pharr Mounds sites was made possible by a grant from the National Scenic Byways program. The Jeff Busby service station concession operation closed in 2008, and replacement of this facility with a comfort station is being accomplished under the National Park Service operational rehabilitation program.
