Sam Joseph Eidt of Huntsville, AL passed away on October 6, 2026. He was born in Natchez, MS to Samuel Joseph Eidt and Allene Simpson Eidt on January 6, 1945. Upon graduation from Cathedral High School in 1963, despite being told not to waste his parents’ money going to college, he went to Mississippi State University where he earned a degree in Animal Science, followed by Auburn University where he graduated with his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 1970. Sam moved to Huntsville and worked at Whitt’s Veterinary Hospital which he bought and renamed Huntsville Animal Clinic. Being both a large and small animal veterinarian led him to meet his future wife by having her horse as a patient. He also developed many lasting friendships because of his compassion and care for their pets.

After selling his clinic, Sam worked part time at Whitesburg Animal Hospital for 10 years, retiring in 2016. He belonged to numerous professional organizations including the American, Alabama, and Madison County Veterinary Associations. He served as President of the Alabama State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners, Board Member of the Animal Emergency Clinic of North AL, and Advisory Board of Huntsville Animal Services. Sam has served as a Board member of Randolph School and the Huntsville- Madison County Public Library. As a member of the American Trakehner Association, he served terms as President and Chairman of the Stallion Inspection Committee. He was a member of the Huntsville Rotary Club where he enjoyed being a mentor to high school students through their Strive program.

Sam’s greatest joy came from his two sons. Not having played sports himself, he delighted in watching their games which led him to coach the Boys Club AYSO soccer team. Throughout the years, he provided a home for dogs, cats, horses, donkeys, goats, chickens, guineas, and peacocks. He enjoyed upland bird hunting, was an avid reader, and never lost his sense of humor. Sam was a faithful member of Central Presbyterian Church. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

He is survived by his wife, Lucia; sons, Chris (Chandra) and Luke (Faye); grandchildren, Elizabeth Feight (Colter), Eva, Nora, and Silas; great-grandson, Cohen Feight; sister, Allene Butler (Butch); brother, Steve Eidt; niece, Lindsey Eidt; nephews, Matt Eidt, Taylor Eidt, and Justin Butler. He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Allene Eidt; and nephew, Ben Butler.

Visitation will be from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, October 17, 2026, at Central Presbyterian Church. A Celebration of Life will follow at 2:30 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Central Presbyterian Church Foundation, 406 Randolph Ave., Huntsville, AL 35801, or a charity of your choice.
