Dorothy Gibson Hoomes, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 30, 2026, at Madison Manor in Madison, Alabama. She was 97 years old. Dorothy was born on September 9, 1928, in Greeneville, Alabama to James Dennis Gibson, Sr. and Ruby Lee (Nixon) Gibson. Dorothy grew up in the Damascus community of Escambia County, Alabama where she met and married Robert Louis Hoomes in 1944. She and Robert moved to Biloxi, MS in 1952, where Robert eventually became the owner of Biloxi Motor Company. Dorothy worked as the business bookkeeper until the early 1960s. After moving to Ocean Springs, Mississippi in 1957, she focused on being a homemaker and being involved in church work at Ocean Springs Church of Christ. She relocated to Madison, Alabama in 2018 where she remained until her death. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Robert, and her younger brother James Dennis Gibson, Jr. She is survived by her younger brother William Glen Gibson, her two daughters Frances Wichman and Suzanne Walton, her son-in-law John L. Walton, III, seven grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren. There will be a private graveside service at the family cemetery outside Brewton, Alabama on Thursday, September 3, 2026.
