Funeral Services for Mr. Wendell “Red” Smith, age 69 of Ashland, will be held on Friday, August 28, 2026 at Benefield Funeral Home in Ashland at 2:00 P.M. with Bro. David Davis and Bro. Billy East officiating. Burial will follow at Lystra Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Smith passed away on Sunday, August 23, 2026 at his home. He was born and raised in Clay County, and worked for several companies around the area over his lifetime, including Southland Manufacturing, Ace Products, Tyson Foods, and Wellborn Cabinets. He was also self-employed for some time. “Red”, as he was known, collected Scrap Iron, enjoyed going fishing, and watching Alabama football. He was cared deeply for animals, always tending to his chickens, goats, rabbits and ducks and other farm animals.

Mr. Smith was survived by his wife, Nadine Smith; two daughters: Linda Kennedy Burkhalter (James) and Crissy Smith, both of Cragford; 5 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren; his mother, Tiny Ruth Smith of Ashland; three sisters: Sheila Headrick (Bill) of Lineville, Darlene Smith of Ashland, and Tammy Salinas (Andrew) of Our Town; two brothers: Wayne Smith (Judy) of Ashland, and Phillip Smith (Elaine) of Millerville; plus a large extended family.

He was preceded in death by his father, Arthur Junior Smith, his wife, Kathy Sue Hallman, and one infant brother.

Active Pallbearers will be Derrick Kennedy, Jonathan Davis, J.J. Mitchell, Larry Archer, John Smith, and John Edmondson. Honorary Pallbearers will be Thomas Burkhalter and Jarrett Kinder.

His visitation will take place on Thursday, August 27, 2026 at Benefield Funeral Home in Ashland beginning at 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. and until service time on Friday
